Canoes on the Goulburn.
The flooding along the lower Goulburn has receded, the Wyuna campsite
is now high and dry, and we are open for business. The most popular adventure
includes the canoe safari down stream to Yambuna Bridge, and most people
stay a couple of nights at the campsite. The cost for the "Adventurous Getaway" is only $95.00 per person incl. GST. All you
need to bring is your food and refreshments for the camp, your bedding
(sleeping bag and pillow) and your sense of adventure. Groups are most
welcome. Phone 03. 5852 2736 or email adventours@hdc.com.au
for further details and bookings.
History
and Heritage.
Late in 1853, several desperate miners where travelling from the Bendigo
goldfields to try their luck at a new strike at Beechworth. Along the
way they encountered some aboriginals near the Rushworth region. The natives
showed the men some 'pretty stones'. This sparked the greatest rush in
history, thousands of prospectors arrived on the rich Central Victorian
Gold Fields, all seeking the mountain of gold. Some of us are still searching.

The
Food Bowl.
The Goulburn Weir retains and raises the waters of the Goulburn River
so that water may be diverted through the main distribution channels to
the Waranga Basin. From here the water irrigates the Western Goulburn
Valley, this region together with the Shepparton irrigation area is known
as the "food bowl" of the nation. The weir is situated just north of Nagambie
and is a massive structure of concrete founded on bedrock, more than 200
metres long and rising 15 metres above the river.
Construction
started in 1887 and was completed 3-years later. The
downstream face is stepped with granite blocks quarried from Mt Black,
some 25 km away. This was a huge undertaking in those days. The weir was
the first major irrigation structure built in Australia and at the time
was an extraordinary engineering feat. The significance of the Goulburn
Weir in watering half a million hectares was recognized in 1913 with its
depiction on the old ten-shilling note.
Accreditation.
River Country Adventours are fully accredited tour operators. In fact
we were in the first 20-Victorian based tourism business's that was accredited
under the new scheme in 1995. You should always tour with accredited operators
who have commitment to the industry.
Thought
for the day!
Getting a tax refund these days is like being shot at…….and missed!
Cheers
for now,
