Welcome
once again to another newsletter, we hope you enjoy and get some motivation
for your next escape into the great outdoors. When we started in the tourism
industry in 1993, the overall benefit to Australia directly from tourism
was $6 billion, now the industry has grown to $17 billion. I wonder where
all this money is going? Certainly not here.
The
lucky winner of last month's competition is Leanne Bree from Langwarrin.
Well done Leanne there were 5-Prime Ministers of Australia during Sir
Henry Bolte's time as State Premier 1955-1972. They were Sir Robert (Bob)
Menzies, Harold Holt, Jack Mc Ewen, John Gorton and Billy Mc Mahon. Leanne
has won a free holiday canoeing and camping on the Goulburn River. From
this newsletter on the prize has been increased to cover two people camping
and canoeing on the Goulburn River with a value of almost $400.00. Well
worth having a go, but you have to be a member to win, membership is only
$10.00 and there are heaps of other benefits for members of the RCA Club.
The
Grampians
This magnificent mountain range that rises from the Western Plains of
Victoria is a must visit destination. Earlier this year a horrific bush
fire swept through this wonderland and burnt to the S/E towards nearby
Willaura, Moyston and Glenthompson. Thousands of sheep perished and miles
of fencing burnt out. The native trees and ferns took a battering and
amazingly have all produced new growth, and the Grampians will slowly
return to normal. Australia is a marvellous place the way our native vegetation
can come back after fire. The hamlet of Halls Gap was extremely lucky
to survive as the raging fire threatened from all sides. This was a case
of luck and the helicopters that saved the township. The last fire in
the region was in 1962, and I remember after the fire was finally put
out, all the boy scouts in the district were given tomahawks and instructed
to wander the smouldering bush putting the badly burnt and terrified animals
out of their miseries. I will never forget this horrible experience, there
were kangaroos & wallabies, koalas, emus, possums, deer, reptiles and
hordes of other creatures screaming in agony everywhere. We only scratched
the surface. Fire is a terrible thing, and to think that some people deliberately
start bush fires makes me sick, they should be sent into the bush after
a fire to destroy the helpless creatures like we had to all those years
ago, then they should be dealt with harshly by the law.
Best
Pies in Victoria
According to our poll and personal tasting, we are pleased to advise that
the best pies in Victoria are made by the Yarra Glen Bake House, 30 Bell
Street, Yarra Glen phone 9730 1873. So next time you are anywhere near
Yarra Glen on the Melba Highway, call in and say hello to Debbie and the
friendly staff and try one the delicious pies. All the ingredients in
the products are purchased locally and baked fresh daily at the Yarra
Glen Bake House. There was plenty of competition from Gillies Pies in
Bendigo, Thurgoona Bakery, Rushworth, Nagambie and Riddles Creek bakeries,
and a few others. Well done Yarra Glen Bake House.
Our next quest is find out from all our readers what you think is the
cleverest bird in Victoria. If you think it is the Magpie or Sparrow,
please let us know with your reasons for nominating the smartest bird.
We will be very interested in the outcome of this. There will be a prize
for the best entry and we will keep you all informed. It should be a lot
of fun.
Paddling
in Paradise
Now is a great time to start planning your camping and canoeing adventure.
River Country Adventours have expanded the fleet of canoes and
kayaks and are keen to work on being the best adventure tourism operation
in the State. To achieve this we need plenty of visitors, we are open
for business and look forward to your enquiry. We have been able to keep
most of the prices the same with just a slight increase in the Adventurous
Getaways and the Deluxe Kanyapella 3-day fully catered safari. Both of
these products involve a fair bit of travelling by us, and with the fuel
costs remaining higher, we had to slightly adjust the prices accordingly.
The Goulburn River from Mc Coy's Bridge to Stewart' Bridge has had successful
Murray Cod releases over the past few years, and these magnificent native
fish are now slowly eating out the European Carp. The river has become
much cleaner, with the silver wattles and native grasses forming a matting
on the banks, which in turn has attracted more birds. River Country Adventours
have many canoeing options along most sections of the Goulburn River and
also have safaris in the Murray River upstream from Barmah Town and options
around Echuca. More photos have been added to our website and we invite
you to take a few moments and have a look.

Old
Jack
Many readers would recall us mentioning this older gentleman from time
to time. No one really knew (including Jack himself) just how old he was.
He had very little education due to the depression and the hard times
he grew up with. Jack became a gun shearer, a drover, fruit picker and
a very good drinker. He was well known all over the place for his wit
and views on life, and most importantly he made people feel happy. Old
Jack, I am sad to say passed away recently. He left a note simply saying
"Told you I was crook!" We are going to miss old Jack, as after he was
born they threw away the mould.........Old Jack was one of kind.
