Welcome
to our May 2006 newsletter, we hope you enjoy the contents and get some
motivation for your next escape into the great outdoors. We trust you
all had a good Easter break, the weather was perfect and most good operators
in tourism have reported plenty of business. The regional areas needs
tourism to survive, with the prolonged drought and downturn in some agricultural
incomes, tourism is giving some hope. Echuca/Moama derives just over 85%
of wealth from tourism related activities, this is very good but how are
other regions going?
Our quest to find the best pies in Victoria has been extended for another
couple of months. We have had nominations for Gillies Pies in Bendigo,
Rushworth Bakery, Riddles Creek, Thurgoona Bakery and Yarra Glen. So nominate
your favourite pie shop even if it is in the City, we want to know where
the best pies in Victoria come from.
Craig Fowler is the lucky winner of last months competition. Craig knew
that the bushranger Ned Kelly lived and died in the 19th century. Well
done Craig, there is another chance to win later in this newsletter.
Membership
There seems to be some confusion regarding membership
and the competition. From July 2006, only members of the RCA Club can
win the competition which will be increased from one person to two. If
you like receiving this free newsletter and don't enter the competition
you will still receive "Travelling Victoria" around this time every month.
However, if you are planning a tour or a canoeing adventure in the next
12-months you may consider becoming a member for the small annual fee
of $10.00 you will get 10% off most tours, all canoeing adventures and
apparel. There is an application form at the bottom of this newsletter.
The
Clydesdale Horse
These gentle giants helped forge the farming lands of Victoria and beyond.
The Clydesdale Horse was ideally suited to Australian conditions with
a large stride which gave the animal good speed for ploughing and harvesting.
The horse was brought from it's native Scotland to Australia and is now
a recognized breed and can seen these days at agricultural shows all over
the land, and Carlton & United Brewery in Melbourne still maintain a team
for promotional purposes. As a boy growing up at Willaura in the Western
District of Victoria, I recall our neighbour had a team of horses. In
1958 the Weekly Times had his magnificent team of horses proudly on the
front page, and during the mid 1960's his old lead horse "Colour" died
and our neighbour had to move into the 20th century when he purchased
his first tractor. My father spent days with him adapting all his implements
to tractor pull. For almost 150-years the Clydesdale Horse was earning
their keep on properties all over Victoria.
Competition
Here is your chance to win a 2-day getaway. All correct entries go into
a hat for the draw around June 10, so good luck. You don't have to be
a member to enter.
Q. What country did the Clydesdale Horse come from?
