Welcome
once again to our monthly newsletter, and if you are receiving it for
the first time, we hope you enjoy the contents and continue to do so for
a long time.
We were amazed at the number of entries in last months competition. Banjo
Paterson was born in 1864, three years before Henry Lawson. The lucky
winner of a free holiday camping, fishing and canoeing at Wyuna is Jessica
Murray from Wallan, well done Jessica. There is another chance to win
later in this newsletter. We had a record number of entries for this competition
and we have changed our policy regarding the competition. From July 2006
the prize is for two (2) people and only members of the RCA Club can win.
Annual subs are only $10.00 and there are other benefits such as 10% discount
off all our services and products (excluding the flight tours and canoe
sales). Your $10.00 can be paid now and will give benefits until June
30, 2007 (15 months for just $10.00). If you are contemplating a tour
or some canoeing becoming a member of the RCA Club would be a wise investment.
More details below. Thanks also for all the kind comments regarding our
monthly "Travelling Victoria", greatly appreciated. We really do have
some fun putting it together.
Fishing
at Night!
One dark moonless night a very keen angler, who was in the dog house at
home, drove his old ute to the Campaspe River, baited up his rod and cast
out into the night. Little did he know he had cast too far and in fact
the bait and hook landed on the other bank. It didn't take long when our
friend had this almighty bite, so powerful it almost wrenched the rod
from his hands. All night he fought, and fought with this monster from
the deep. His mind was racing, perhaps he had the biggest Murray Cod ever
hooked in Australia on the line. Hours later our weary fisherman welcomed
the first rays of dawn, and to his absolute horror the light of day revealed
he had in fact hooked a fox. The fox was not very happy at all about being
pulled in the river and it took quite a while for our hero to own up to
his night activity. The fox escaped with the hook still in his mouth,
and I bet he never told his mates about his mishap either! This is a true
story.
Whales

advantage of the excellent fishing in the Great Australian Bight. The
tours are 3 or 4-days respectively. We have itineraries and some great

Autumn
in the Bush
Around this time of the year the River Red Gums begin to bloom, which
brings insects, which is a source of food for the young galahs and cockatoos
that now start to emerge from their nests in the hollows in the trees.
Because these young birds have been cooped up in the trees since spring,
some have trouble flying. The ever alert goanna and the wedge tailed eagle
quickly kill and eat the stranded young birds. This is the way it is in
the bush, hard but it is the survival of the fittest that has ensured
that life goes on from season to season. This is also the best time for
camping and canoeing because it is not so hot and the river is still flowing
well due to the environmental flow that we mentioned in the last edition.
In fact on a recent "Kanyapella" safari on the Lower Goulburn a pair of
Yellow-Billed Spoonbills were spotted sitting on their nest near the river.
It is rare occurrence at this time, it means that things are pretty good
in the bush at the moment. We have vacancies for the Easter break as well
as the Anzac break. Your bookings and inquiries will be welcomed, and
by becoming a valued member of the RCA Club, you will get a discount of
10%.
It is is estimated that over 90,000 visitors will be in Melbourne for
the Commonwealth Games, it it hoped that many of these will venture from
the city into the country. A reminder that we are open for business and
so to are many other tourism operators in Rural Victoria.
