Travelling Victoria
with River Country Adventours Volume 77: January 2006

Welcome once again to our monthly bulletin, and we hope you got everything you wanted for Christmas. Marvelous time in Australia with the Test Cricket at the MCG, and people being so friendly. The world seems far less caring these days and it is nice to kick back with family and friends at this special time. Last months lucky winner of the competition is Joy Charteris from Alderley. A group of swans in flight is called a "Wedge" and when they land either on land or water they are called a flock. One entry really made me laugh when I read "Premiership!". This of course was in respect to the Sydney Swans drought breaking premiership in the Australian Football League back in September 2005. Our reference is Oxford.

Gunpowder
Was first used in Australia at Mt Balaclava, just south of Rushworth in 1854. An American named Lewiss arranged to blow a hole in the top of the tor in the hope to expose the illusive veins of gold. They used too much and blew the top completely off, and all the men had to run for their lives. When the dust settled, they crept back to see the damage and everywhere they looked there was gold gleaming in the sun. Was this the mountain of gold in Central Victoria the rumors were raving about? Word of this strike circled the world which brought thousands of people from all nations to our shores in the hope of finding gold, and becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams. The gold soon petered out in the Whroo area and this huge influx of people moved to Beechworth and other gold fields in the hope their luck would change.. By the end of the rush in 1870, just under a million people were living in Victoria. The gold rush brought Victoria a population base and wealth.

Hard Yakka
I felt sorry for a group of young men who had arranged for the 3-day "Kanyapella" canoeing safari last month. The first day went well, and on the second and third days a very stiff north-westerly wind blew up making paddling very difficult. At least in football you get to kick with the wind every second quarter, but there was no let up for Meng and his group. We can't remember the conditions so difficult and it is hoped these boys return and have another go when the conditions are more normal.

Competition
Another opportunity for one of our lucky readers to win a free getaway on the Goulburn River, camping, canoeing and fishing. All you have to do is correctly answer the poser, and all winning entries go into the draw around February 10, so have a go, you never know you luck.
Q. Who appeared in the most movies. Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra?

Family Getaways
Tourism Greater Shepparton should be congratulated for the new brochures aimed at the visitors to Victoria for the pending Commonwealth Games in March. The brochure depicts the Goulburn Valley as a caring, family orientated place to visit for everyone. The brochure is quite spectacular and if you want a copy we will be happy to forward it on to you.

More Good News
The "Kingfisher" Cruiser at Barmah Lakes is back in operation, it is nice to know Benita is back in business after the terrible act of arson some months ago when her boat was burnt to the water. River Country Adventours have tours that incorporate this awarding winning eco-tourism experience on the Mighty Murray.

Happy New Year
Joan and Rob Asplin of River Country Adventours wishes all our clients and friends a wonderful 2006, we trust you all keep good health, and are very happy. We have tours and canoeing adventures on the Goulburn and Murray Rivers waiting for you. We are also now taking expressions of interest for the special flight tours to Ceduna to view the massing of the whales in the winter. This is a fantastic tour and we hope to run several during the winter and we are also planning for an extra day fishing in the Southern Ocean whilst at Ceduna.
