Welcome
once again to our monthly tourism newsletter; we hope you enjoy and get
some good ideas for holidays and that getaway you have been dreaming about.
The first edition of "Travelling Victoria" was sent out via e-mail to
56-lucky recipients on June 17, 2000. We are now up to edition 75 and
nearly 1400 people are now receiving this bulletin. We think it is worth
it, keeping our clients and friends up to date with what is happening
in tourism in Regional Victoria. It is always a pleasure to communicate
with nice people and when you receive lovely messages like this it certainly
makes it worthwhile-
"Hi Rob, Wanted to let you know what a delightful time Judy, Anne,
Jean and I had on your river trip. It was talked about for days. We were
wishing you had Australia on your shirts. Might want to consider that?
Jean and I do white water canoeing but it was nice to paddle on a quiet
beautiful river for a change. Will look forward to your newsletters.....Lois"
Texas USA.
The
lucky winner of the free holiday camping and canoeing on the Goulburn
River is Denise Norman from Mt Helena in Western Australia. Kyabram is
just slightly more north than Wangaratta. The facts are- Kyabram Latitude
= 37 52 02; Wangaratta =37 51 00. Or about a good punt kick with the wind.

Competition
To win a free getaway fishing, camping and canoeing on the Goulburn River
in Northern Victoria all you need to do is correctly answer the question.
All correct entries go into an 'old hat' for the draw around December
10. So have a go, and you never know your luck.
A. What is a group of foxes called?

Good
Policy
River Country Adventours have been operating the "Canoes on
the Goulburn" for over 10-years and in that time have had three camps
washed out because of heavy rain. The most recent was the Cup Weekend
when a group of 9-people had to be towed out of the forest surrounding
the river. Another group couldn't get in and the girl-guides proposed
paddle on the Wapiti Creek had to be cancelled due to the rain. The groups
that are unable to complete the safaris are offered a free adventure at
another time to make up for the misfortune. We think that this is good
policy, and in addition with our allowing children under 12 free with
their parents, we are certain this goodwill will be well received by our
valued clients and the public.
Halls
Gap
The first European to see the massive Grampians was Major Thomas Mitchell
when he and 3-of his men climbed and named Mt William in 1836. In 1841
Charles Browning Hall located a gap through the mountain range and this
became known as Halls Gap. Gold was found nearby in 1887 which brought
many prospectors from the by now dwindling goldfields of Bendigo and Ballarat.
Halls Gap
is 262 kms NW from Melbourne and best way from the city is via the Western
Highway and follow the signs from Ararat through Moyston and Pomonal.
Between Pomonal and Halls Gap there is the delightful Gap Vineyard to
visit. We recently completed a winery tour of the region and can recommend
this friendly family run winery. The scenery is absolutely stunning.
Ceduna
Tours
We are now taking bookings and expressions of interest for the flight
tours to Ceduna to see the whales at the Head of the Bight. These tours
will depart from Shepparton and Echuca next winter when the whales arrive.

Adventurous
Getaways
Still our most popular canoeing adventure. All you have to do is turn
up with your bedding, food and refreshments for the camp and a sense of
adventure. We supply everything else including an industrial portable
toilet at the campsite. The adventure usually is over a couple of nights
and during the stay we arrange for two morning canoeing safaris both of
which are fully catered. For large groups we employ the use of a coach
for transport to the starting points and to get you back to the campsite
at the finish. Kids under 12 are free with their parents and fishing is
available and we can arrange for fishing licenses if required. This is
a terrific adventure and for details and bookings please contact us on

or phone 03. 5852 2736
Nankeen
Night Heron
Sometimes referred to as "Rufous", these beautiful water birds are rarely
seen. They are nocturnal and are heard at night in the bush by their distinctive
loud 'skeowk'. A couple of weeks ago two were spotted flying across the
Goulburn River near Stewart's Bridge. A rare sight indeed, this was the
first time I have ever seen 2-Nankeen at once in over 30-years kicking
about the bush.
Cheers
