Welcome
again to our monthly newsletter, we hope you enjoy the contents and get
some good ideas for holidays and that getaway you have been thinking about.
Another busy month, the river has dropped down to just above summer level
and is ideal for canoeing and kayaking. Fishing is also quite good but
remember the taking of Murray Cod is illegal until December 1. Yellowbelly
are biting on scrimp and worms at the moment.
Last
months lucky winner of the free holiday on the Goulburn River, fishing,
camping and canoeing is Lorraine O'Carroll from East Perth. Lorraine is
our first winner from Western Australia. Broome is just further south
than Cairns and the official figures are Broome -17.0492 S and Cairns
-16.8736 S. Not much in it; therefore we reckon it was a great question.
There is another opportunity to win later in this newsletter.
Christmas
Tour
Bookings are slow at the moment for this tour. The "All Rivers" will depart
from Melbourne on December 20 for a couple of fantastic days in Northern
Victoria, staying overnight in Echuca. We are extending the discount of
10% for "Travelling Victoria" readers until the end of October. We look
forward to your bookings and inquiry as you can take advantage of the
reduced price $238.50 all-inclusive.
The
Man they couldn't hang!
The first person executed by hanging in Australia was 17-year old Thomas
Barrett, who stole some butter within a week of the first fleet landing
in 1788. The last person hanged was 41-year old Ronald Ryan in 1967. The
luckiest man was one Joseph Samuels, who on the September 26, 1803 was
to be hanged for the murder of a police constable. On the first attempt
the rope broke, on the second the knot came undone and on the third the
rope broke yet again. Samuel, insensible and badly hurt, was reprieved
and recovered after surgery to pass into history as the 'man they couldn't
hang'. Three years later, again in trouble with the law, Samuels with
some convicts stole a ship and fled the country never to be seen again.
Kids & Dogs
We are delighted with the response to our children under 12 FREE with
their parents on our camping and canoeing adventures. This includes the
half and full day safaris on the Goulburn and Murray Rivers, but does
not include the self-guided safaris. In these adventures we charge by
the canoe. We are also a dog friendly business and welcome your pooch
to the bush. Most dogs love the freedom of being able to run, sniff and
swim at the remote campsites.
Competition
Here is your opportunity to enter the competition by correctly answering
the poser. Your name goes into an old 'hat' and the draw is around November
10. The prize is a free holiday, camping, canoeing and fishing on the
Goulburn River at one of the Wyuna campsites. You usually have around
3-months to take up the prize.
Q. Which is further north-Wangaratta or Kyabram?
A. info@adventours.com.au
Wanted
River Country Adventours has once again the opportunity of conducting
canoe and kayak hire on the beautiful estuary at Barwon Heads. We need
a trustworthy person from around the Geelong region to look after this
side of our business. It is hard to estimate the potential for this venture
and we asking for any expressions of interest at this stage. The applicant
would have to have a current First Aid certificate, a vehicle with a tow
bar and a genuine love of people, especially kids.
Sad
news
Our good friends who run the popular "Kingfisher" cruise at Barmah Lakes
have had some senseless vandals destroy their boat. For years the "Kingfisher"
was moored near the boat ramp on the Murray, quite safely. Now some hoons
have set fire to the craft, burning it to the water, ruining a terrific
tourism business. We have neighbourhood watch in our towns and cities
and we reckon it should be extended to the bush. Someone must know something
about this. I hope the culprits are caught and face the full might of
the law.
Great
Season
The farmers in regional Victoria are looking forward to a bumper season.
We have had above average rains and the wheat, oats, barley and triticale
crops have had a good drink and are all up and looking strong and healthy.
Grasses are growing and by the time you read this plenty of grass will
be cut ready for the bailer. In the bush the wattles are still in bloom
as well as many native plants. Birds are now sitting on their eggs, platypuses
are mating. It is wonderful to escape the stresses of life and revert
to nature for a time. Canoeing along a remote section of river is a terrific
way of seeing nature up close. We are open and looking for business and
we have plenty of options along many sections of the northern rivers.
