Welcome once again to our monthly newsletter, if you are receiving it
for the first time, we hope you enjoy and continue to support well into
the future. Last months lucky winner of a free holiday camping and canoeing
on the Goulburn River at Wyuna is Nicole Morrison from Crows Nest in NSW.
The curlew is a native bird that was
once wide spread over Victoria, and other parts of Australia. Their distinctive
cries in the night kept a lot of country people awake. Sadly, their numbers
have been depleted by agricultural activities and the introduction of
predators such as the fox and feral cats. Curlews are flightless and have
rather long legs and appear to creep through the bush. Some farmers are
setting paddocks aside and allowing the curlews to breed in a natural
habitat. One such dairy farmer in our region is going ahead with this
plan, and we wish Russell well with this very worthwhile venture. As this
will be within walking distance from one of the camps on the Goulburn,
campers in the future may get the opportunity to see Curlews in their
natural habitat.
Sea
Kayaks on the Goulburn
When we were contacted by Kev and Cheryl from Sydney wanting to bring
their sea-kayaks to the Goulburn we couldn't believe our luck. More at
home on Sydney Harbour, the sea-kayaks did handle the Lower Goulburn well.
The legacy of their adventure is now on a disc and will eventually be
proudly placed on our website. The sea kayaks averaged around 10-kph during
the journey which is about twice as quick as a conventional Canadian.
I'll let you know when the photos are on line.
Bikes,
a stroll and a paddle
St Augustines School in Kyabram have a terrific 'Outdoor' education program
headed by Mr. Matt Carver and other devoted staff and parents. The year
10 students over a 3-day period ride their bikes from Kyabram to Barmah,
some 75-km. After spending the night camping at Barmah the bikes are transported
back to school and the kids with their teachers head off bush walking
through the Barmah Forest to a remote camp spot 20-km and past the Lakes.
The final day River Country Adventours arrive with a load of canoes
and the group then paddles down the Murray all the way back to Barmah
Town, stopping for lunch and refreshments at the Lakes. A bus is awaiting
the slightly weary but happy students to take them back home. This program
has been running in early May for 8-years, and every year the weather
has been perfect. We would be happy to expand on this activity for any
other school or group interested in doing something different.
Competition
Another chance to win a free holiday camping and canoeing on the beautiful
Goulburn River at the Wyuna campsite. All you have to do is correctly
answer the question and your name goes into the old hat for the draw on
June 10, good luck.
Q. Which State is Barmah in?

Canoes
& Kayaks
Over the past year or so we have received a number of inquiries into the
purchase of good used canoes and kayaks. Our canoeing business is growing
and after careful consideration we have decided to maintain the fleet
we have and in fact we are planning to increase next year. All our current
gear is in good condition. Therefore, we will only sell new canoes or
kayaks for the time being. We enjoy an agency with "Canoes Plus"
in Melbourne, and we can arrange for the sale and delivery of your brand
new canoe. Photos and the current price list are on the web www.adventours.com.au

Commonwealth
Games
Will be a huge event in Melbourne next March, and tourism in Victoria
is gearing up for the massive influx of visitors to the State. Many regions
are arranging forums to see how best to market their products. One such
organization is Tourism Greater Shepparton. The tourism operators in Shepparton
and district have arranged for key people from the Games Corporation to
visit Shepparton and workshop how to gain the best from the opportunities
that will occur. Shepparton has so much to offer, first class accommodation,
great eating places, close to leading winemakers, attractions and of course
the Goulburn River. Shepparton is in the heart of the irrigated Goulburn
Valley, the food bowl of the nation. These are very exciting times.
