Travelling Victoria
with River Country Adventours Volume 67: March 2005

It is hard to imagine that this newsletter has been around since June 2000, when 56 lucky people received "Travelling Victoria" for the first time. In those days it was called "Touring Update", and was sent out twice a month. The first "Travelling Victoria" was sent out on July 27, 2000 from then on a monthly basis. According to our records there are 9-people who received the very first edition, and still do. If you think you are one of these lucky people, then please get in touch with us and a special gift will be available special@adventours.com.au

Last month's winner of a free holiday camping and canoeing on the Goulburn River in Northern Victoria is Emma Sweeney from Kyabram. Emma knew what she could do in Echuca. Don't worry if you missed out, there is another chance to win later in this newsletter.

Cockatoos & Galahs
The common magpie is the most populous bird in Australia, although along the Northern Rivers in Victoria you would think the cockatoos and galahs would be on top. At this time of the year the young cockatoos and galahs come out of their hollows in the trees and learn to fly. The young are about the same size as their parents, this is why you never see little ones. At this time also, the Red River Gums are blooming which attracts the insects and is a good source of food for the hungry young birds. Because these young have been confined to the hollows in trees since the spring, some can't fly and hit the ground making easy prey for the ever alert eagles and goannas. It is tough going growing up in the Australian bush.

Kids, dogs and fishing
River Country Adventours welcome children with their parents to share the pristine environs of the Northern Rivers and kids under 12 are free with their parents. Fishing is also an important part of our activities. We supply all the gear including bait and can arrange for fishing licenses. We also welcome dogs at the campsites, but haven't any life jackets for them as yet! Last month the ideal situation happened. Grandmother, Father and three delightful girls, the twins Lillian and Isabella aged 11 between them somehow managed to hook a good sized Golden Peach (Yellowbelly) but after getting the fish all the way into the bank it broke the line and escaped back into the river. Their little sister Laurel aged 7 showed them how by landing another good sized Yellowbelly a bit later. The kids were thrilled with the fishing, and so was I.

Here is your chance to win a free holiday on the Goulburn, fishing, canoeing and camping. All you have to do is correctly answer the poser, and your name goes into the draw on April 10. Good luck.
