Our little story about the elusive robins in the last newsletter caused some fun It is good to report that most of them are now living around Kyneton and in particular at Cliston Farm. I still want to know what you are feeding them…..Kath? All I can say is that robins are rare in Northern Victoria, but we have a huge increase in the numbers of parrots, many species.

Canoes on the Goulburn
The river is magnificent at this time of the year. The prolonged dry spell has kept the river flowing clean. All the river birds are pairing up for nesting, the wattles have burst into bloom, and we have plenty of firewood. If canoeing is not your go at this time of the year, we have many bush walking options. The river is full of hungry fish, and the bush is calling.

Unique Opportunity
Two vacancies now exist for a very special "Flight to Lake Eyre" scheduled for August 12-14. The 3-day tour includes motel accommodation at William Creek Hotel, all meals, desert tour and out to Lake Eyre, the Flinders Ranges and a spectacular flight across the northern section of the huge lake to see the lunettes and the birds that are estimated in the hundreds of thousands. For more details on this chance to see the unusual event in the outback, you can e-mail back or give River Country Adventours a call on 5852 2736.

Great Place…This
I am fascinated with the names the early explorers and the settlers gave to places in Australia. In many cases names were derived from the indigenous language, and others from sheer brilliance. Fancy naming a creek "Nine Mile Creek, Dry Creek or Seven Mile Creek, and better still Red Hill! However, quite a few places and things got the title of greatness. Referring to Great Western, Great Artesian Basin, Great Australian Bight, Great Barrier Reef, Great Dividing Range, Great Lake, Great North Walk, Great Ocean Road, Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria Desert, Great Wall of China, Great Western Highway and the Great Western Plateau…………………..Have a great day!

The Skylark
In February 1854 the first of seven skylarks were released in the Barrabool Hills, near Geelong. The gold diggers missed the sounds of the European songbirds. The skylark has done very well indeed and is just as happy singing over the grasslands of Victoria as it is over the heather of faraway Scotland. This is one introduced species that has not had any affect on our environment.

Travelling Victoria
In our early years of business, we produced a monthly newsletter "Travelling Victoria'. The cost of publication and then distribution became a factor. This medium is ideal, quick and effective. Being regionally based tour operators, we have a intimate knowledge of the history and heritage of Victoria. As a further service, we would be pleased to offer you and your friends any assistance with tours and places to see within the State and beyond.

Thanks again for your time,
Cheers,

Rob Asplin
