Welcome to another edition of our monthly newsletter "Travelling Victoria".
This is being sent to over 500 people now, all over Australia and many
places in the world. When we sent out Volume 1 only 57 were sent. Thanks
for your continued support, it is very much appreciated.
Desley
Lamb from Hawthorn is the lucky winner of last month's competition. We
had a record number of correct entries and Desley was drawn from the hat.
The answer which everyone got right was that Ned Kelly was hanged in the
Old Melbourne Gaol on November 11, 1880. I guess it was the New Melbourne
Gaol in those days.
Little
Dinosaurs
Some weeks ago whilst digging a hole near the Goulburn River, I disturbed
an underground nest with 9 eggs about the same size as a Starlings. I
had broken one by mistake and noticed a baby long necked fresh water tortoise
trying to get out of the broken shell. I carefully brought the find home
and now we have 7 little tortoises in a fish tank. The other 2 eggs have
not hatched yet. Our little pets spend about half their time in the water
and the other on the sand. They are about the same size as a 10 cent coin
at the moment, and when they get bigger, I'll take them back to the river
where they spend the rest of their long lives. We feel so privileged to
be taking care of these beautiful little creatures.
Public
Liability
We reckon we have the answer to the massive increase in P/L premiums.
River Country Adventours now is taking orders for quality
Australian made polo shirts and caps. With the logo the shirts are worth
$25.00 and the caps $10.00 plus postage and handling. We are hoping this
venture into Apparel will be rewarding and we will not have to increase
our prices for canoeing and tours. We will welcome your inquiry and orders
email- apparel@adventours.com.au
Thanks.
Barlow the Eagle
There was only one sighting of Barlow the young Wedge Tail Eagle during
the last month, and that was near the junction of the Goulburn and Murray
Rivers at Kanyapella over Easter. Barlow was rescued almost 12 months
ago from drowning in the Murray near Barmah. The young male eagle had
got himself caught on some illegal fishing gear and was saved by a family
canoeing in the region. Barlow was cared for by the rangers before being
released into the skies above the Barmah Forest. Barlow has a white flash
under his left wing, this is rare in eagles. Barlow is a legend in these
parts.
Mouth Almighty
The Murray Cod are biting again in the Goulburn River, and the best bait
is Bardie Grubs, Yabbies, Scrimp or worms. You must have a fishing license
and the cod must be at least 50 cm long. The cod will go to up to 50 kg
but these monsters are rare these days. You should use a large hook, as
the cod has a huge mouth.
Competition
Another chance to win a free weekend camping and canoeing on the Goulburn.
All you have to do is send the correct answer and wait for the draw on
May 10. This months question is easy, and we are looking for another record.
