Lindy Bracy from the Melbourne suburb of Footscray is the latest winner
of a free camping and canoeing adventure on the Goulburn River. We had
a record number of entries, everyone seemed to know that the Eureka Stockade
was in Ballarat 1854. Thanks to all the entries, keep trying as you have
to be in it to win it.
You
will also notice that this newsletter is in a different format, we hope
you like it, and if you don't keep it to yourself.
Public
Liability
A topical issue with the Adventure Tourism industry at the moment. The
increased premium and speculation of future hikes is one thing but the
uncertainty of continued coverage is a major concern. River Country
Adventours are fully accredited, have a risk management policy included
in the overall business plan, and enjoyed trouble free tours over a number
of years. Yet, future coverage is clouded. This is a crazy situation.
Bill Callan CEO of Zuellig Insurance Brokerage said recently in Shepparton
"10-years ago we had accidents.....now we have litigation".
River
Country Adventours will continue to monitor the situation, and this
is the most serious challenge that we have encountered, we think that
volunteer organizations should be exempt for Public Liability and all
claims capped at say $30,000.00. Serious claims of negligence and neglect
are a separate issue.
Year
of the Outback
We are inviting expressions of interest so we can arrange more tours out
into the Lake Eyre region. This is fascinating country, and at the moment
it is the largest salt pan in the world, and when the floods arrive from
tropical Australia during the winter, it will become the largest lake
in the nation. The whole region is a haven for many thousands of water
birds. It takes around 4-months for the water to flow into the basin,
and 4-days for the birds to swarm in. Birds such as the magnificent Pelican
will breed up to three times in a season. For more information in our
flight tours to the outback simply contact rob@adventours.com.au
Barlow the Eagle
Regular readers will recall that last year a young male Wedge Tail Eagle
was rescued after being tangled up in illegal fishing gear in the Murray.
This eagle has a distinctive white flash under his left wing and has been
sighted recently and it appears he has a mate. When an eagle chooses a
mate, it is for life. Other birds that do this include galahs, swans,
pelicans and some owls. Actually, Barlow is named after the brave family
from England who saved him from drowning, and the story has been told
far and wide. Thanks for all the people who have inquired into the well
being of young Barlow, perhaps we should start a fan club.
