with River Country Adventours Volume 19: August 2001

Another month, another newsletter another challenge to win a free weekend camping and canoeing on the beautiful Goulburn River. Last month's competition was a dismal failure. We were looking for the funniest holiday story, but nobody replied. Made us think that all holidays are perfect and nothing ever goes wrong. With no winner from last month's competition; the prize will jackpot to a free weekend for two. Keep reading and enter, you never know your luck.

The Yarra River
The Yarra River begins as a small stream which rises near Mount Baw Baw in the Great Dividing Range of Victoria, and flows some 240 km through Melbourne and into Port Phillip Bay. In pre-European times the river provided an abundance of food and shelter for the local Aborigines. The first European known to have seen the river was New South Wales Surveyor-General Charles Grimes in 1803, and he called it Freshwater Creek. The present name was given by John Helder Wedge while surveying the region for John Batman in the early 1830's. It is believed to come from the Aboriginal words "yarra yarra" said to mean "always flowing". These days the Yarra is a great source of relaxation and attracts thousands of tourists annually.

The Hub of Victoria
Shepparton is the 5th largest city in the State, and is ideally situated for a holiday destination. Within an hour from Shepparton is the river port of Echuca/Moama, Barmah Forest, Whroo Forest, The Mighty Murray, Goldfields of Central Victoria, the Snow Fields, Strathbogie Ranges and the world famous Kyabram Fauna park. Through Shepparton flows the Goulburn River, the longest in Victoria and is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, bushwalking and camping. Shepparton has some of the best accommodation in regional Victoria, and is known as the Convention and Seminar capital of Victoria. Blessed with a great climate the Goulburn Valley is famous for growing clean and fresh fruit and vegetables and has a huge dairy industry. Water from the Goulburn system irrigates half a million hectares that has produced the "Food Bowl" of the nation.

Next trip, head to friendly Shepparton, there is heaps to see and do, such as Ardmona Kids Town, the Heritage Farm, and heaps of other great attractions.

World Wide Web Update
River Country Adventours website can be found at www.adventours.com.au and we have now included a photo gallery featuring the Canoes on the Goulburn. Click on Canoes and then the photo gallery. You never know, you may see yourself on the internet. In any case, there are some great shots in there and if you have never been to river this may give you some idea of what you have been missing.

Early Spring
You know you are in Australia when the wattles begin to bloom. It is a special time, the birds are pairing up and nesting, the forest is ablaze with golden yellow and the fish are biting. It all means it won't be long before the canoe season gets going again. We have introduced more safaris and camping options, but the most popular is the section of river from the main Wyuna campsite (Melway Map 521 H/6) to the junction with the Murray near Echuca Village.

Competition
We want you all to have a look at the photo gallery on our website www.adventours.com.au and the first correct entry drawn from the hat will win a free weekend for two (2) canoeing and camping over a weekend on the Goulburn River in Northern Victoria.
Question- How many photo's are currently being displayed in the Gallery?
Winners will be notified by email on August 10.

Thought for the Day
What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh.

Cheers for now
