Welcome
to our monthly newsletter, and thanks for all the positive feedback, greatly
appreciated. Gail Bateman from Mc Kinnon was the April winner of a free
weekend camping, canoeing and great time on the Goulburn River. Gail knew
that Mytleford is the nearest town to the hamlet of Carboor in N/E Victoria.
We get plenty of entries, and there is another chance to win later.
The
First Tuesday in November.
The Melbourne Cup was the idea of Captain Standish, and the first race
was held in 1861, with Archer the winner. By the time the 1880 cup was
run, the race was so popular that over 100,000 people turned up to see
Grand Flaneur win. Some historians even argue that the Melbourne Cup paved
the way for Federation in 1901 by providing an opportunity for politicians,
bankers and pastoralists from rival colonies to meet regularly.
The
Dry Heart.
The driest place in Australia is the deserts around Lake Eyre in South
Australia. To see water in Lake Eyre is one of the natural wonders of
the world. River Country Adventours are again arranging special flight
tours from Victoria to William Creek during the winter, and we welcome
your inquiry. The flights are popular with people who haven't got the
time or desire to spend days with coach travel.
Night
Walks.
Our good friends at Eco-Adventure Tours in the Yarra Valley, Dandenongs
and the Rangers offer great Night Walks with Billy Tea and Damper. For
venues and dates check out their web page at www.wire.net.au/~ecoadven
An
Eagle on the Line!
During a recent canoe safari in an area known as the "Narrows" between
Barmah Lakes and Barmah Township, the Barlow family on holiday from UK
came across a most distressed Wedge Tailed Eagle that had become entangled
in some illegal fishing gear in the Murray River. They bravely managed
to free the poor bird that had obviously gone after the bait and got hooked.
Later the Rangers attended the scene and happily the bird has made a rapid
recovery and once again can soar over the majestic forests of Northern
Victoria.
