Robbie Purcell from Epping in Victoria was the first correct answer in last month's competition. Robbie has won a free weekend in the bush for knowing that the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly was born in Victoria in 1855. Poor old Ned's luck ran out on the 11th of November 1880 when he was hanged in the Old Melbourne Goal. Many criminals have been hanged in Australia since the first fleet in 1788; the last was Ronald Ryan in Melbourne in 1967. The luckiest was one Joseph Samuels, who on September 26 1803 was to be hanged for the murder of a police constable. On the first attempt the rope broke, on the second the knot came undone and on the third the rope broke again. Samuels would pass into history as "the man they could not hang!" Three years later, again in trouble with the law for petty crime, Samuels fled the colony with some other convicts aboard a stolen ship. They were never seen again. New
