Steve Melzer from Hughesdale was right on the job with the Hopkins River
flowing boldly to the Southern Ocean at Warrnambool. The Hopkins rises
on the southern side of the Mt Cole range between Ararat and Ballarat,
adjacent to the Pyreenes Mountains.
Edi
In the upper valley of the King River between Moyhu and King Valley, is
the tiny settlement of Edi. In 1878, Edi was the rendezvous point for
the police and trackers sent out to scour the country for the notorious
Kelly Gang. These days you can catch a feed of trout at the local fish
farm, or just take in the splendid scenery.
Canoeing
on the Goulburn
River Country Adventours have canoe safaris along many sections of the
Goulburn River. For the more experienced paddlers the section from Eildon
to Seymour gives about 4-days of sheer delight. The river supports a large
population of platypuses and koalas here. A two-day paddle from Seymour
to wineries around Nagambie is also very popular. Most of the camping
and river safaris are completed in the lower region between Wyuna and
Echuca. In this area we have a series of good safe campsites and we welcome
any further inquiry and bookings.

Fishing for Yellowbelly
Also known as Golden Perch or Callop, this magnificent native fish is
quite prevalent in the northern waters of Victoria. Normal sizes around
2-3 kg and are great fighters. Best baits include yabbies, scrimps, worms
and freshwater mussels. They will be attracted at times by lures, but
a running sinker and bait is the best method. Remember you should have
an inland fishing license to fish in the regional areas of the State.
Competition
Another chance to win a free weekend camping, fishing and canoeing on
the Goulburn River, be the first correct answer to this question.
