Andrew
Nield from Collingwood is the recent winner for a free weekend camping
and canoeing on the Goulburn River. Andrew was the first to answer that
in 1853 gold was discovered at Whroo in 1853, congratulations Andrew.
Smack, bang in the middle!
Mount Moormbool (816 metres) is the geographical centre of Victoria. Situated
between Nagambie and Costerfield near where Graytown once was situated,
in the southen section on the Rushworth State Forest. Next time you are
in the area, you will notice 3-tors, the middle one is Mt Moormbool.
Mia
Mia
In 1910, the first flight of an Australian-built aircraft was made from
a paddock near Mia Mia, about 20-km south/west of Heathcote. The pilot,
John Duigan, perching unprotected on the lower wing of a flimsy-looking
biplane he had constructed himself, took to the air for a memorable 7-metre
hop. A historic marker on the Mia Mia to Lancefield road commemorates
the feat.
Christmas in Australia
It is summer time in Australia and it is hot and dry. It is about time
we all purchased Xmas cards that depict our nation. There are no reindeers
here and definitely no snow. If others feel this way, please let me know.
Young
Paddler
In a recent camp and safari, some families from Melbourne came to the
river to experience the bush. One family had a 5-year old boy, who completed
the "Yambuna" safari. Andrew is the youngest to achieve the day long paddle.
Well done.
Kookaburra
take off
I had the pleasure recently to witness a mother kookaburra teaching her
young to fly. Mum flew across to a nearby branch, then called to her chicks.
I had to laugh watching them flapping their wings but nothing happening.
Finally, one lad became air-borne, but not for long, heading directly
towards the ground. Thankfully, his wings worked and what a proud day
when he landing beside his mum. One by one the others followed. Sometimes
watching the birds is better than fishing.
Competition
Another chance to win a free weekend on the Goulburn for one lucky person.
The first to correctly answer the question will be notified. Name the
river that rises in the Pyrenees Ranges and boldly flows through the fertile
Western Plains to the sea at Warrnambool? Thompson, Avoca, Wimmera, Hopkins,
Murray, Nile, Yarra or Broken?
Take
care
